And so the adage is repeated: “Every journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” The simplicity and hopefulness of its message rings in our ears like the calming words of a mother to her child. Plastered on every classroom door because, of course, if you repeat something over and over again it must be true, right? Well, let's just say that sometimes the journey is much longer than a thousand miles and that many don’t get to take a single step. For those who struggle on those journeys that are truly difficult, it does not start with a single step but rather a leap of faith, one in which they are unsure if there will even be ground to land on. For many, it is quite common that their journeys go unheard, that the earth beneath their feet turns to quicksand and their cries for help are drowned out by a gunshot when it's already too late. Sometimes, the most important steps are the ones that we have not taken, when everything remains static, unmoving.
